Apraxia 5K Race Report

My biggest obstacle in running, biking or doing anything else is highly dependent on my bowel movements. Sorry if this is a little gross but if you run/bike/swim you know what I'm talking about. So to make sure this doesn't get in the way, I got up a little early to drop off the kids. I did and did it again an hour later. Since running regularly 2 months ago, I've been very regular which I'm super happy about.

Now on to the race. My wife reminded me that today wasn't about running my first race but rather to support the organization that supports Apraxia which my son is diagnosed with. But of course I still wanted to run a solid 5K.

My time on 5K? A slow 26:11. My goal was 24 minutes. I never thought I was going to run any slower than 26.

Here's a few factors that contributed to this time:

1.) The entire 5k was on trails. I've only ran on trails (Wissahickon Trail) once and I wouldn't really call that trail running since most of it was flat with some small rocks scattered.

2.) I started out way too fast. I ran 7:30 the first mile and then... well you can do the math. I haven't done any speed/tempo training at all so that's why I'm slow.

3.) The music on my iPhone was all messed up. As soon as I started, the music shut off and I spend the first 1/4 mile trying to figure it out. I ended up fixing by mile 2.

4.) Gnats. Lot of gnats all over the place.

5.) I didn't run Wed-Sat. I was lazy and couldn't get up so I didn't run. I didn't want to over train and be sore so just didn't feel that bad about not running.

6.) I'm out of excuses. The 5 reasons above are just horrible excuses that I will learn going forth. I don't like excuses and won't make this mistake again.

My next 5k is next Wed, the Ambler 5K. I hope to break 24 minutes.
